Project: Longer Locks - 4 Month Update!

Hey guys,

Today is the day that I provide you all with a 4 month update on my Longer Locks project!  For those of you who don't already know, the 1st of October 2012 marked the day I started taking action to achieve the healthy, long natural hair that I have always dreamed of having.  This project started out incredibly well as by the end of November I had already managed to attain a whopping 4cm of hair growth (so nearly double the rate of average hair growth!) and as a result of that growth I became even more determined to follow this project through until.. forever? who knows!

Anywho.. it's been a whole two months since my last progress report, so without further ado, here are my latest measurements..

Growth in the last 2 months: 1cm
Growth since starting the Longer Locks project: 5cm

I'm not sure why my hair growth rate has slowed down again (though I will list some possibilities below), but I'm really not too bothered by it as my hair has improved in so many other ways since the end of November.

As you can see from the photo comparison above, my hair now appears to be a lot more thicker and full of natural body.  It is also extremely shiny for hair that hasn't just been run through a hair straightener, and though it still has it's bad days, it generally seems to be a lot more manageable in terms of knots/tangles.  In fact when I was visiting my best friend who just happens to be the manager of a hair salon earlier this month, I asked her to teach me how to cut my split ends so that I wouldn't have to go in for regular trims, and she told me that she could barely see any!  Isn't that great?  :)

Possible reasons for my hair growth rate slowing down:
  • The fact that I've been taking zinc supplements (I've since read that taking zinc supplements, or too many zinc supplements, without a zinc deficiency can actually stunt your hair growth.. eek!).
  • I've stopped taking Vitamin C tablets (out of sheer laziness) and haven't been eating yoghurt.
  • I've started taking painkillers for my headaches again.
  • I've started using the Toni & Guy 'Reconstruction Mask' and have apparently been using it the wrong way (I've been using it all through my hair instead of just using it on the ends).
  • I've started using a Michel Mercier detangling brush in between washes (I don't believe that this would have slowed the growth rate down, but it may be damaging my hair without me realising it).
  • Wearing my hair up more often due to this terrible summer heat.

Things that seem to be helping:
  • Being on a reduced level of my Narcolepsy medication.
  • Taking 2 capsules of Odourless Fish Oil/Vitamin D3 tablets daily.
  • Drinking lots of filtered water and avoiding soft drinks, cordial etc.
  • Not drinking alcohol.
  • Consuming lots of dairy products.
  • Not colouring or trimming my hair.
  • Only washing my hair every 2-3 days.
  • Avoiding heat tools as much as possible, and allowing my hair to air dry.
  • Using treatments to mask my split ends.
  • Using a wide toothed comb to comb through wet hair.
  • Only using snag free hair elastics.
  • Getting a full nights sleep.
  • Not being at Uni, haha.

Upcoming changes:
  • Once I have run out of zinc supplements I will start taking some women's multivitamins that my Dad's partner Judy gave me which contain folic acid and biotin (as well as many other lovely ingredients).
  • I will be getting back into the habit of taking Vitamin C tablets, even if it's just to avoid getting sick.
  • I will start using mask treatments on the mid to end lengths of my hair rather than all through my hair.
  • I will stop getting regular trims (not that I've had one in over 6 months) and start cutting my split ends with the hairdressing scissors that Mum gave me for Christmas.

  2. I love your Project Longer Locks idea and look forward to the next instalment. I should consider fish oil and vitamin c for my locks. I tend to use multivitamins or the hair growth ones but I think maybe you pay a little extra just for the title with the hair growth ones.

    1. Naww, thanks hun! :) I wouldn't say the vitamin c does too much for my locks, but if it keeps me healthy then that's always a good thing. :P and I totally agree about hair growth supplements, though I'll never know for sure until I give them a go.

      Thanks for stopping by!

      xx

    1. Thanks hun! :) I totally agree that using less or no heat makes all the difference. That and wearing snag free hair elastics, lol.. much less breakage! :P I haven't tried Moroccan oil yet but I will be once I've used up all the treatments I currently have going on. :)

      Thanks for the suggestion!

  7. Each type of lock is more suitable for a specific situation. For instance, a three hundred pound pull magnetic lock will work better for light duty security measures like securing a cabinet.www.autolocksmithsanjose.com
